The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office recently introduced DEKA Sentry robots to enhance security at the Adult Detention Center in Georgia. These advanced robots, created by DEKA, are part of a 90-day pilot program designed to reinforce surveillance capabilities, streamline operations, and increase safety for staff and inmates.
Standing nearly six feet tall, the Sentry robots have 360-degree cameras, night vision, and heat sensors. This advanced sensor array enables them to detect and respond to unusual activity inside and outside the facility. The robots can function autonomously to monitor areas of the detention center, but they can also be manually operated by staff when specific guidance is needed. Two-way audio also allows personnel to communicate remotely with individuals in various parts of the center.
For the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office, deploying the Sentry robots is a proactive step to integrate technology with traditional security methods. Their presence could potentially reduce risks and lessen the workload on human staff, allowing them to focus on more complex tasks while ensuring that all parts of the detention center are continuously monitored.
As correctional facilities across the U.S. face increasing pressure to improve safety and efficiency, Cobb County’s investment in DEKA’s robotic solutions reflects a growing trend in law enforcement and public safety. If successful, this program could inspire similar initiatives nationwide, illustrating the transformative potential of robotics in corrections.
