Jacobs, announced today they have been chosen by the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) in the United Kingdom to oversee the procurement of over 100 new remotely operated manipulator robots. This project will take place at the Windscale Laboratory located in West Cumbria, England.
In collaboration with Wälischmiller Engineering, Jacobs’ team of robotics specialists will be responsible for acquiring replacement machines specifically designed to handle radioactive materials for inspection and processing purposes.
Furthermore, Jacobs will partner with Numech, an engineering company based in Cumbria, to develop and manufacture dedicated liners that will provide radiation protection for each of the manipulators. These liners will be utilized in the facility’s 12 highly radioactive caves.
To ensure effective operation and maintenance of the new equipment, remote handling specialists from Wälischmiller and Jacobs will provide training to NNL staff. This training will take place at a purpose-built mock-up facility located at Jacobs’ Engineering and Technology Centre near the Sellafield site. Moreover, Numech’s involvement in the project as a local small-medium enterprise will bring additional economic benefits to the region of Cumbria.
